Phil Ivey has been branded as the best poker contender on the planet by most of the top-ranked pros. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to NJ before reaching the age of one. His papa introduced him to penny-ante 5-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was hooked on poker and wanted to pickup anything he possibly could about poker. Phil would tell his parents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil didn’t permit the detrimental comments from others annihilate his dream of becoming one of the best poker players on the planet.
He started playing seriously after getting a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He sharpened his game at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The beginning number of years for him were a learning opportunity and winning wasn’t a regular thing at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker when he made 2 final tables and came away with his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha event. At the closing table he defeated a number of the well known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his skills to the next level and moved out west to Vegas. Phil continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Ivey credits his success to hard work and an undying passion for poker. Phil says that he is learning every day and is very abashed about his accomplishments. Phil knows he makes mistakes in each session of poker and always aspires to improve.
Although Phil has come first in some big tournaments, he favors winning money games on a normal basis.
